While in prison, terrorist John Corben was poisoned with a rare blood disease by a corrupt doctor working for Lex Luthor. Corben escaped from jail and made a deal with Luthor to get rid of the disease. Corben underwent an operation that transferred his mind into a solid metal body with a heart of kryptonite. Once inside the android body, Corben realized he could no longer feel anything and all his senses were gone. Now as Metallo, Corben went to destroy Superman for putting him in jail in the first place, but Superman showed Metallo that it was Luthor who poisoned him. While trying to get at Luthor on his private yacht, Metallo fell in the water and sank to the bottom of the ocean, but he has since shown up several times.

Metallo was a member of the Superman Revenge Squad along with Weather Wizard, Livewire, Kalibak, and Toyman and battled the Justice League. He was quickly taken out by J'onn.

When Grodd formed his new Legion of Doom, Metallo became a member. His first mission was to travel to Skartaris along with Silver Banshee to retrieve a giant kryptonite stone. However, Green Lantern, Stargirl, STRIPE, and Supergirl showed up and stopped them. During a fight with Supergirl, Metallo lost an arm and eventually had his kryptonite heart cut out. While being questioned by Green Lantern in order to get his heart back, Metallo was starting to talk when his brain shorted out and his mind shut down. The League took him back to the Watchtower to see if J'onn could retrieve any leftover information.
