Powers Boothe
First Appearance: Brave and the Bold
Status: Legion Founder/Dead
Gorilla Grodd is a
super intelligent ape who comes from Gorilla City, an African city, unbeknownst
to humans. He first emerged when he left Gorilla City after a failed attempt to
take it over using his mind control device. Grodd vowed revenge on the city and
promised to eventually destroy it. He traveled to Central City and met up with
Dr. Sarah Corwin. Grodd and Corwin gained access to a military base and fired
missiles at Gorilla City, but they were stopped by the Justice League. During a
battle with Grodd, Flash crossed the circuits in Grodd's mind control helmet.
When Grodd attempted to use it on Flash, it shorted out and left Grodd with
brain damage.
He later returned
and formed the first Secret Society, but Grodd now possessed a new power. In
addition to his enhanced strength, agility, and super intelligence, Grodd now
had the abilities of his old mind control device and can take over people's
minds on his own without the helmet. His Secret Society consisted of Giganta,
Killer Frost, Shade, Sinestro, Parasite, and Clayface. They had even captured
the entire Justice League, but J'onn had disguised himself as Clayface and freed
the others. The League and the Society battled it out, and the League eventually
won.
Grodd showed up
again when he formed his new Legion of Doom and helped Lex Luthor escape from
prison. Tension grew between Grodd and Luthor when Luthor, the Key, and Dr.
Polaris were sent to retrieve the Spear of Longinus, which Grodd only wanted to
hang in his office. Grodd later freed the sorceress Tala from her mirror prison.
He sent Luthor and Tala with a team of villains to steal a mystic totem from a
Tibetan monastery. Grodd took over Gorilla City and used the totem in an attempt
to turn everyone in the world into apes. His plot was foiled by the Justice
League and they escaped back to the Hall of Doom.
At the next Legion
meeting, Luthor shot Grodd and took over leadership of the Legion. Grodd was
placed in a holding cell unable to move at all. When Luthor brought the Hall of
Doom into space on a quest to find Brainiac, Tala freed Grodd. The Legion civil
war broke out with Luthor's followers and Grodd's followers. Luthor got Grodd to
use his mind control on him so he could counteract it and control Grodd. Luthor
made Grodd go into the airlock and Grodd was sucked out into space.
